Decide these before sellers call
Every quote depends on the same few choices. Settle them and quotes come back comparable.
- Size
- 20 ft is the common storage size; 40 ft high cube adds a foot of height for tall items.
- Grade
- Wind and watertight is enough for storage. Pay for one-trip only if looks or resale matter.
- Where it will sit
- Firm, level ground. Gravel or railroad ties under the corners help drainage.
- Room for the truck
- About 80 ft straight for a 20 ft and 120 ft for a 40 ft, per one seller’s delivery guide. Check yours with the delivery site checker.
- Door direction
- Decide which way the doors should face before the truck arrives; turning it later is hard.
- Permits and HOA rules
- Texas rules are set by each city and county. Ask the City of Lubbock or your county before placing one in town.

Questions people ask
How much does a shipping container cost in Lubbock?
One 2026 price guide puts delivered prices at about $2,000–$3,200 for a wind and watertight 20 ft container and $3,500–$5,500 for a new or one-trip 20 ft. A new 40 ft runs about $4,500–$7,500. Some sellers advertise used 20 ft units from $1,350 before delivery. Use the price calculator, then compare local quotes.
What is the difference between cargo-worthy and wind and watertight?
Cargo-worthy containers are structurally sound and can be certified to ship again. Wind and watertight units keep weather out but no longer meet the stacking rules for ships, so they are sold for ground storage. For a container that stays on your land, wind and watertight is usually enough.
How much room does the delivery truck need?
One national seller’s guide says a 20 ft container needs about 80 ft of straight length to unload and a 40 ft about 120 ft, with gates at least 12 ft wide and 14 ft of overhead clearance. Height rises to about 21 ft while the bed tilts. Try the delivery site checker.
Is it cheaper to rent or buy?
Rent runs from about $95 a month for a 20 ft at one seller to $150–$250 a month in another guide. If you need storage for more than a year or two, buying usually works out cheaper. For a few months, renting avoids resale hassle.
Do I need a permit for a container in Lubbock?
In Texas, container placement is governed by local zoning, which varies by city and county, and many cities require a permit. Check with the City of Lubbock or your county, and your HOA if you have one, before delivery.
